SEO Agency in the Netherlands: How International Companies Win the Dutch Market

SEO agency Netherlands: the short answer

An SEO agency in the Netherlands helps you rank in a market where Google handles roughly 93 percent of all searches and buyers type their queries in Dutch, even though nearly everyone speaks English. The strong ones combine native Dutch content, technical SEO and Dutch authority building. Serious retainers run from €650 to €5,000 per month.

That is the summary. The rest of this page explains why the Dutch market trips up companies that arrive with a translated strategy, what a good local partner actually does, and what you should expect to pay.

Why the Dutch market punishes a translated strategy

The Netherlands looks like an easy market from the outside. Small country, excellent English, one dominant search engine. Then the first quarter’s numbers come in and the translated pages rank for nothing. The reason is almost always the same: Dutch search behaviour does not match the English keyword set the strategy was built on.

Dutch buyers search in Dutch

The Netherlands ranks first in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, ahead of 122 other countries. That fact misleads a lot of market-entry teams. Dutch professionals read and speak English fluently, but when they need a supplier, they open Google and type Dutch.

Translation makes this worse, not better. A company selling custom software will find that Dutch buyers search “software laten maken” (literally: “have software made”). The dictionary translation of the English keyword gets close to zero searches. Every service category has quirks like this, and only native keyword research finds them.

One country, two search markets

At the same time, a real English-language search market exists inside the Netherlands: expats, internationals in Amsterdam and The Hague, and B2B buyers at companies where English is the working language. The query “seo agency netherlands” is itself an English query typed from Dutch soil. Dutch-language queries usually carry several times the volume of their English twins, but the English searcher is often the international buyer with the bigger budget. You want to rank in both, which means producing content in both languages from one strategy rather than running two disconnected sites.

Trust signals Dutch users look for

Dutch buyers check for local signals before they fill in a form: a .nl domain or a clearly Dutch presence, reviews from Dutch customers, a KvK (Chamber of Commerce) registration, a Dutch phone number, iDEAL if you sell online. None of these is a formal ranking factor on its own, but together they decide whether a Dutch visitor converts, and Google measures what happens after the click.

Google evaluates your authority for Dutch queries largely through Dutch sources: national and trade media, sector associations, regional business platforms, partner sites on .nl domains. A backlink profile built entirely from international tech blogs does little for “boekhoudsoftware” or “software laten maken”. A local partner knows which Dutch publications respond, which directories still matter and which link deals to avoid. Regional visibility, Google Business Profile included, is its own discipline; we cover it in local SEO.

What a strong Dutch SEO agency looks like

A Dutch SEO agency earns its fee when it does things your in-house team or global agency cannot: native-level Dutch content, judgment about the local link market, and the ability to serve both language markets from one strategy.

Native Dutch and English output

Not translated content, but content written for how Dutch and English speakers actually search. Both versions carry the same strategy.

Senior strategy, small team

You talk to the specialist who does the work, not an account layer. In the Dutch market, senior judgment beats headcount.

Transparent reporting

Live insight into positions, traffic and conversions. You should never wonder what happened this month.

Visible in AI answers too

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews now answer buyer questions directly. A modern agency optimizes for those engines in both languages.

The general selection criteria, the questions to ask and the red flags to walk away from are the same everywhere; we wrote them up in how to choose an SEO agency. This page is about the Dutch layer on top.

One practical note on shortlisting. Searching “best seo agency netherlands” mostly returns directories like Clutch, Semrush Agency Partners and The Manifest. They are fine as a longlist. Judge the shortlist on published work, on whether the agency ranks for its own competitive keywords, and on whether it asks about your business before quoting a price.

SEO services Netherlands-based agencies should offer

For an international company entering the market, the service list looks like this. Anything less is a partial solution.

  • Dutch keyword and market research, done natively rather than translated
  • Technical SEO: crawlability, site speed, hreflang between your Dutch and English pages
  • Content in Dutch and English, written by people who understand the subject
  • Dutch link building and digital PR aimed at .nl authority
  • Local SEO for the cities where you have or want presence
  • GEO/AEO: structured, extractable content so AI engines cite you when buyers ask for recommendations, in Dutch and in English; the full explanation is in what is AIO
  • Reporting you can open any day of the week, not a monthly PDF

That last pair matters more each quarter. Dutch buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT or Perplexity to compare suppliers before they ever hit a SERP. Showing up in those answers, on comparison and competitor-research questions included, is earned the same way a ranking is: clear structure, real expertise, schema markup, clean markup that machines parse without guessing.

What does an SEO agency cost in the Netherlands?

Dutch market rates are moderate by international standards. These are the ranges we see:

ModelBest forIndicative price
One-off auditUnderstanding what is broken€500 to €2,000
Small retainerLocal businesses, single-market focus€750 to €1,500 per month
SMB retainerGrowing companies, national ambition€1,500 to €3,500 per month
Competitive or bilingualInternational players, two language markets€3,500 per month and up

The old enterprise model sat far above this. Traditional SEO for a large company could run around €20,000 per month: a coordinator orchestrating a pool of copywriters, a branding specialist, and standing meetings about blog topics. Slow, expensive, and most of the budget went to coordination rather than results.

The opposite extreme fails too. Fully automated SEO, where software generates and publishes content without a strategist involved, does not reach page one. Google and the AI answer engines have gotten good at recognizing bulk content, and they reward genuine quality instead.

The semi-automatic middle

Viralistic runs SEO semi-automatically: senior specialists set the strategy and guard quality, automation does the repetitive work around them. The knowledge usually lives inside your company already; our process extracts it in a fraction of the meeting time and turns it into content that reads like an expert wrote it, because one did. Trajectories run from €650 per month (excl. VAT) for a small project to about €5,000 per month for larger companies. Significantly below the traditional cost of the same output.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Dutch SEO agency to rank in the Netherlands?

You need native Dutch capability, whether hired or contracted. Dutch keyword research cannot be translated, and Dutch authority is built through Dutch sources. Companies searching “dutch seo agency” have the right instinct: a local partner, or an international one with real Dutch capacity, gets you there faster than an English-only team learning the market on your budget.

Should we target Dutch or English keywords in the Netherlands?

Both. Dutch queries carry most of the volume, and Dutch buyers search in Dutch despite excellent English. English queries reach expats and international B2B buyers inside the country. The practical answer is paired NL/EN pages with hreflang, built on one keyword strategy per language rather than translations.

What does an SEO agency cost in the Netherlands?

Most Dutch SMB retainers sit between €750 and €3,500 per month, with audits at €500 to €2,000. Viralistic’s semi-automatic trajectories run from €650 to about €5,000 per month depending on scope, which stays well under the roughly €20,000 per month the traditional model cost large companies.

How long before SEO shows results in the Dutch market?

Count on three to six months for visible movement and six to twelve for mature results, the same as other Western European markets. Low-competition Dutch niches can move faster. Anyone promising a Dutch top position within weeks is telling you what you want to hear.

Is a .nl domain required to rank in the Netherlands?

No. A .com with correct hreflang and geo-targeting ranks fine. A .nl domain does help conversion, since Dutch buyers recognize it as local commitment, and it can simplify targeting. Many international companies run a .nl alongside their global .com, which works well when structured properly.

Does AI search matter in the Netherlands yet?

Yes. Google shows AI Overviews on Dutch queries, and Dutch professionals use ChatGPT and Perplexity to shortlist suppliers in both languages. Being cited in those answers takes structured, extractable, genuinely expert content. It is standard in every Viralistic trajectory; see what is AIO.
