AIO (AI Optimization, also called Answer Engine Optimization) is optimizing your content so AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention, cite and recommend your brand. Where SEO is about ranking high in the classic search results, AIO is about being named in the answer the AI gives itself.
More and more people ask their question not to a search bar but to an AI. It gives one summarized answer instead of ten blue links. If you are not in it, you do not exist for that user, however good your classic SEO is. That is why AIO is not a replacement for SEO, but the logical next layer on top.

What is the difference between SEO and AIO?
SEO and AIO share the same foundation, good and reliable content on a fast, technically clean site, but the goal differs.
| SEO | AIO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank high in search results | Be named in the AI answer |
| Result | A click to your site | A mention, citation or recommendation |
| Field | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Core | Keywords plus authority | Clear, quotable, factual content |
AIO, GEO, AEO or LLMO: what is the difference?
Four acronyms circulate for the same field, which makes it needlessly confusing. They describe largely the same practice, seen from different angles.
| Acronym | In full | Where the emphasis falls |
|---|---|---|
| AIO | AI Optimization | The broad term: being visible in AI systems |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | The academic term, from research into generative search |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | The emphasis on the answer itself, not the click |
| LLMO | Large Language Model Optimization | The emphasis on the model generating the answer |
Pick whichever word you prefer, but know that an agency telling you GEO is fundamentally different from AEO is mostly trying to sell you a new product. The work underneath is the same: making a generative system trust your content enough to cite it.
What demonstrably works to get cited?
Here GEO is fortunately not guesswork. Researchers including a team from Princeton published a study on generative engine optimization in 2024 (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) that systematically tested which changes make a source more likely to appear in an AI answer.
The result is strikingly prosaic. What worked hardest was adding verifiable statistics, quotations from credible sources, and explicit citation: changes that lifted visibility by tens of percent. Purely stylistic edits, such as writing more fluently, helped noticeably less. Classic SEO tricks like keyword density did almost nothing.
That is good news, and it is why we frame this as earning a citation rather than forcing one. There is no trick to sell. The move that makes you visible in AI answers is precisely the move that makes your content better for a human: say something concrete, back it up, and say where it came from.
Do not let anyone tell you SEO is dead
Every wave of AI visibility produces agencies claiming classic SEO is over and that you now need a separate GEO engagement. That is not true. AI systems draw heavily on the same sources that already rank well in search. If your SEO is in order, most of the GEO work is done. Selling a separate track on top of what you already pay for is usually double billing.
How do you measure whether it works?
This is the honest weak spot of AI findability: it measures far less cleanly than SEO. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT, and AI answers are not the same for everyone, since they vary by user, by phrasing and by moment.
What you can do in practice:
- Ask your own questions. Keep a fixed list of questions you want to be found for, and run through them periodically in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Note whether you are mentioned, and with which page.
- Watch referral traffic from AI sources. Visitors arriving from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai show up in your analytics, and for most sites that number is climbing steadily.
- Track impressions, not only clicks. An AI Overview above the results can push your clicks down while your visibility goes up. Steering on clicks alone leads you to the wrong conclusion.
Be sceptical of anyone promising an exact AI visibility percentage. The measurement is not there yet, and you deserve to know that before signing anything.
How do you make your brand findable for AI?
AI models prefer to cite content that is clear, factual and structured. A few principles that help right away:
- Answer questions directly. Start a section with a short, complete answer an AI can lift word for word.
- Be concrete and factual. Numbers, definitions and clear statements are easier to cite than vague marketing language.
- Structure with headings and lists. A logical structure helps both Google and the AI understand your content.
- Build authority. AI trusts sources that are mentioned elsewhere too. Real, expert content beats mass generated text.
Real content wins
AI models are trained to recognize and ignore shallow, generic text. Genuine, expert content on a technically strong site is exactly why you surface in both Google and AI answers.
