SEO agency Berlin: the short answer
An SEO agency Berlin companies hire should do three things: research keywords in German instead of translating them, build authority on German sources, and rank you in Google and AI answers alike. Berlin retainers run from roughly €500 to €8,000 per month. Viralistic delivers this remote-first from Amsterdam, bilingually, from €650.

Berlin is the one German city where an English-speaking partner genuinely works. It is also the city where a purely English strategy quietly fails. This page explains both halves of that sentence: how the German search market actually behaves, what a Berlin SEO agency should deliver, what the market charges, and where an Amsterdam agency fits into it. For the universal checklist on picking a partner, see our guide to choosing an SEO agency.
Why the Berlin market is unlike any other in Germany
Berlin is Germany’s startup capital, and Berlin Partner’s Startup Ecosystem Report 2025 says so in as many words. Thousands of venture-backed companies sit between Mitte, Kreuzberg and Neukölln, joined by scale-ups, e-commerce brands, agencies and studios. A large share of them run English as their internal working language, with founders and marketing leads who never learned German at all.
That produces a split that shows up directly in the search data. The German query “seo agentur berlin” pulls around 1,900 searches a month nationally, peaking at 3,600 in May 2026, at a cost per click of roughly €14.76. Its English twin, “seo agency berlin”, sits near 210 searches a month, but advertisers bid it up to about €23.61 per click. Fewer searches, more valuable searchers. The English market in Berlin is small in volume and heavy in budget.
Investors, hires and customers all research you online. Authority content and technical health decide whether you look like a category leader.
German shoppers compare obsessively and abandon slow pages. Product content, speed and structured data carry the revenue.
Studios, labels and agencies fight for a small set of high-intent terms. Portfolio pages rarely rank on their own.
Low volume, high deal value. Depth, proof and German-language trust signals separate the shortlist from the rest.
Germany is not the Netherlands: the search market is genuinely split
Here is the fact most international teams get wrong. Google does not own German search the way it owns Dutch or British search. StatCounter puts Google at roughly 80 percent in Germany, with Bing near 10 percent, followed by Yandex, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and the Berlin-born, tree-planting search engine Ecosia. Compare that with the Netherlands, where Google handles more than 90 percent, and the difference is a fifth of the market.
Two practical consequences follow.
First, Bing deserves real attention in Germany, and not only for its own results. Microsoft Copilot pulls from the Bing index, so your Bing visibility now feeds an AI assistant sitting inside Windows and Microsoft 365 on a very large share of German office desks. Getting indexed cleanly in Bing Webmaster Tools is a twenty-minute job with a disproportionate payoff here.
Second, privacy-minded alternatives such as Ecosia and DuckDuckGo carry a share that is small nationally but skews young, urban and Berlin. They largely inherit Google and Bing results, so the same work covers them. Your effort compounds instead of splitting in two.
The one German ranking factor nobody puts in a checklist
German buyers check the Impressum. A German-language legal notice, a real address, a phone number and a VAT ID are legally expected on commercial sites in Germany and are read as a trust signal by users long before Google measures anything. Missing them costs you conversions on traffic you already paid to earn.
German or English: which language should you rank in?
Both, but not equally, and never through translation. Dictionary-translating your English keyword set into German is the single most expensive mistake in this market. German compounds nouns, so real buyers search “suchmaschinenoptimierung” and “webseiten erstellen lassen”, not the literal rendering of your English phrase. The volume sits in phrasings a translator has no reason to guess at.
- Rank in German when you sell to German companies, German consumers, or anyone whose procurement happens in German. This is where the volume is: “seo berlin” and “suchmaschinenoptimierung berlin” each pull around 2,900 searches a month, against 210 for the English head term.
- Rank in English when your buyer is an international founder, an expat operator, or a global team based in Berlin. Terms like “seo services berlin” and “berlin seo agency” are typed almost exclusively by that group, and they convert at higher values.
- Run both from one strategy, paired with hreflang, rather than as two disconnected sites. The structure is the same one we describe for the Dutch market in our page on the SEO agency Netherlands question.
Authority follows the same logic. Google judges your standing on German queries largely through German sources: trade media, sector associations, regional business platforms, .de partner sites. A backlink profile built entirely from international tech blogs does very little for a German head term. And if you have a physical Berlin address, the local pack is its own discipline, covered in local SEO.
What a Berlin SEO agency should actually deliver
Look at the live results page and you see two kinds of competitor: Berlin agencies with a Google Business Profile in the local pack, and directories such as Clutch, Semrush Agency Partners and werbeagentur.de renting out the shortlist. Neither tells you what the work involves. This does.
The seo services Berlin agencies should have on the table:
- German keyword and intent research, done natively rather than translated
- Technical SEO: crawlability, Core Web Vitals, hreflang across your German and English pages
- Content written by people who understand your subject, in the language your buyer searches in
- German link building and digital PR aimed at .de authority
- Local SEO and Google Business Profile work, if you have a Berlin address
- Bing indexation and Microsoft Copilot visibility, which matters more here than anywhere else in Western Europe
- GEO and AEO, so AI engines cite you when a buyer asks for a recommendation
- Reporting you can open any day of the week
Anything less is a partial solution sold at a full price.
What does an SEO company in Berlin cost?
German rate cards are reasonably transparent, and Berlin sits at the top of them. Agencies in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich typically charge 20 to 40 percent more than providers in smaller German cities. These are the indicative market ranges:
| Model | Who it fits | Indicative market price |
|---|---|---|
| Junior freelancer | One-off tasks, small sites | €50 to €80 per hour |
| Senior freelancer or consultant | A defined project such as an audit | €100 to €180 per hour |
| Agency consulting | Ongoing strategic support | €90 to €200 per hour |
| Small retainer | Local businesses, one language | €500 to €1,000 per month |
| SMB retainer | Growing companies, national ambition | €1,000 to €3,000 per month |
| Competitive or bilingual | Scale-ups, e-commerce, two language markets | €3,000 to €8,000 per month and up |
The hourly rate, though, tells you almost nothing about the outcome. A €200 hour spent on strategy beats four €50 hours spent producing filler. What you are really buying is judgement about where the effort should go.
Semi-automatic SEO: senior strategy, accelerated by automation
The old enterprise model sat far above the table you just read. Traditional SEO for a large company could run to around €20,000 a month, and the money did not go where you would hope: a coordinator kept an army of copywriters busy, a branding specialist sat alongside them, and everyone met on Tuesdays to decide what the blog should cover. Most of that budget bought scheduling, not rankings.
The opposite extreme fails just as reliably. Point software at your site, let it generate and publish without a strategist in the loop, and you will not reach page one. Google and the AI answer engines have learned to spot content produced at volume, and they hand the visibility to whoever brought actual expertise.
Why we call it semi-automatic
Senior SEO specialists with years in the field keep the eagle-eye view: which keywords, which pages, in which order, in which language. Automation then accelerates the execution, taking on research, monitoring, technical checks and reporting. Quality goes up while cost comes down. Trajectories run from €650 per month (excl. VAT) for a very small project to about €5,000 per month for larger companies, significantly lower than traditional costs.
Specialists set the direction and guard quality. No junior working through a checklist on your budget.
Monitoring, audits, competitor tracking and reporting run automatically, so senior hours go into strategy.
We extract the expertise already inside your organisation in a fraction of the meeting time and turn it into content with real depth.
How that split between human judgement and machine execution works day to day is covered in AI SEO services.
Visible in Google and in AI answers
Optimising only for ten blue links leaves a growing share of the German market on the table. Google shows AI Overviews on German queries, and Berlin founders routinely ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini to shortlist suppliers before they open a search engine at all. You can see the market catching on inside the results page itself: “GEO Agentur Berlin” now appears as a related search, and several ranking Berlin agencies mention ChatGPT placement in their own meta descriptions.
Being cited in those answers is earned the same way a ranking is. Direct answers an engine can lift verbatim, provable expertise, schema markup, and clean markup a machine parses without guessing. It matters most on the comparison and competitor-research questions, the moment when a buyer is actively weighing vendors. The discipline is explained in full in what is AIO.
Where an Amsterdam agency fits into Berlin
Straight answer, because you deserve one before you spend an hour on a call. Viralistic does not have a Berlin office. We work from the Herengracht in Amsterdam, hold a 5.0 rating on Google across 30 reviews, and serve Berlin brands remote-first. We do not employ an in-house German-native copywriter either; German-language content is produced by our team and delivered under native German review before it goes live.
That is a genuinely good fit for some Berlin companies and a poor one for others.
International founders, expat operators and global teams get native English strategy, content and reporting as the default, not an add-on.
Bilingual output from one strategy is how we already work in Dutch and English. Adding German follows the same structure and the same hreflang discipline.
Amsterdam to Berlin is one time zone, a short flight and a video call. Nothing about the work requires sitting in the same room.
If your growth depends entirely on the Berlin local pack and German-only content at volume, hire a Berlin agency with feet on the ground.
We built the same bridge before. SilverDrive, an Amsterdam chauffeur service, grew into an internationally operating brand running fully on organic findability, across markets where we were never physically present. Joshua Faerber of SilverDrive puts it this way, in Dutch: “Viralistic begeleidde SilverDrive naar een internationaal gericht bedrijf dat volledig draait op organische vindbaarheid. De website en alle systemen besparen ons enorm veel tijd.” Translated: Viralistic guided SilverDrive into an internationally focused company running entirely on organic findability, and the website and systems save the team an enormous amount of time.
If your focus turns out to be closer to home, the SEO agency Amsterdam page covers that market instead.
How to shortlist a Berlin SEO agency without wasting a quarter
Searchers arrive here by a dozen routes. Some type “seo company berlin”, some “seo services berlin”, some “berlin seo agency”, and they all want the same thing: a partner who can prove the work. Directories are fine for a longlist and useless for a decision. Use Clutch or werbeagentur.de to gather names, then judge the shortlist on four things: whether the agency ranks for its own competitive keywords, whether it shows published work rather than logos, whether it asks about your business before quoting a price, and who actually does the work once the contract is signed. Many agencies sell with a senior and deliver with a junior.
Two red flags specific to this market. An agency that promises German rankings without discussing German keyword research is planning to translate, and an agency that cannot explain how it handles Bing and AI answers is optimising for the search market of 2020.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an SEO agency cost?
In the German market, expect €50 to €80 per hour from a junior freelancer, €100 to €180 from a senior one, and €90 to €200 per hour from an agency consultant. Berlin sits at the upper end of those bands. Viralistic works on monthly trajectories rather than hourly billing, from €650 to about €5,000 per month.
What does an SEO agency cost per month?
Monthly retainers in Germany run from roughly €500 for a small local package to €8,000 and beyond for competitive or bilingual programmes, with most SMB budgets landing between €1,000 and €3,000. Anything under a few hundred euros a month buys reporting, not results.
What exactly does an SEO agency do?
An SEO agency researches what your buyers search for, fixes the technical foundation of your site, produces content that answers those searches better than the current top results, and builds authority through relevant links and mentions. In Germany that work happens per language, since German and English queries behave differently.
Who is the best SEO agency?
There is no single best agency, only the best fit for your market, language and budget. Judge candidates on verifiable reviews, published work, their own rankings, senior staffing on your account, transparent pricing, and visibility in AI search. An agency that answers clearly on all six is usually a safe choice.
What are the four types of SEO?
On-page, off-page, technical and local SEO. On-page covers content and structure, off-page covers links and mentions, technical covers crawling, indexing and speed, and local covers your Google Business Profile and map visibility. A modern programme adds a fifth strand, GEO and AEO, for visibility inside AI answers.
Can ChatGPT do SEO?
ChatGPT accelerates parts of the job, including research, drafting and schema markup, but it does not do SEO on its own. It has no strategic view of your market, no way to verify its own claims, and no judgement about which page should exist at all. Unsupervised AI output is exactly the bulk content Google has learned to discount. Senior direction plus automation is the combination that ranks.
Is SEO still worth it?
Yes, and the reason has shifted. Organic search still delivers compounding traffic at a cost per click far below the €14 to €23 advertisers pay for Berlin SEO terms. On top of that, AI assistants build their recommendations from the same content Google ranks, so a page written to rank now works twice.
Do I need a German agency to rank in Germany?
You need native German capability, whether hired, contracted or reviewed. Keyword research cannot be translated and German authority is built through German sources. Whether that capability sits in a Berlin office or in an Amsterdam agency working with native German review matters far less than whether it exists at all.
Ready to be found in Berlin, in both languages?
One strategy, two languages, live reporting. Talk to an Amsterdam team that builds visibility in Google, Bing and the AI engines your buyers already ask for recommendations.
