What is a digital agency? Types, costs and how to choose one.

A digital agency is an outside partner that plans and runs a company's online presence: strategy, brand, website, search visibility, campaigns and automation. Most fall into five types: full-service, digital marketing, web design, SEO and strategic. The right one depends on the problem you need solved and on who owns the overall direction.

Search for a digital agency and you get hundreds of firms promising strategy, creativity and growth. What they actually do varies enormously. One builds websites. Another runs ads. A third mostly writes strategy decks. All of them call themselves a digital agency, which makes the label close to useless when you are trying to hire one.

This guide gives you a way to tell them apart. You will learn what a digital agency is, how it differs from a digital marketing firm, the five types you will meet, what outsourcing marketing tends to cost and the red flags that point to a poor fit. We write from the inside. Viralistic is a strategic digital partner in Amsterdam, and when a company asks us for marketing, we often say no and propose a different first step.

What is a digital agency?

A digital agency is a company that helps organisations with everything that happens online, from strategy and brand to website, search visibility, campaigns, content and automation. You hire one to buy expertise and capacity you do not have in-house.

Unlike a traditional advertising agency, which thinks in campaigns and media buys for TV, print and outdoor, a digital agency works in channels that run continuously and can be measured. That difference shapes everything: how the work is planned, how it is priced and how success is judged.

The labels overlap. Digital agency, digital marketing agency, online marketing agency, interactive agency, holistic agency: the name on the website tells you little. The better question is what an agency is willing to be accountable for. A single channel, or the outcome of your online presence as a whole?

Digital agency vs digital marketing agency

A digital marketing agency, sometimes called a digital marketing firm, focuses on attracting customers through online channels: paid search, paid social, SEO, content and email. A digital agency is usually broader and may also cover brand strategy, website design and build, hosting, and automation.

The five types of digital agency

Five types cover most of the market: the full-service agency, the digital marketing agency, the web design agency, the SEO agency and the strategic digital agency. They differ in breadth, in depth and above all in who carries responsibility for results. Our own services span most of these disciplines, but the point of this overview is to help you pick the type that fits your problem.

Full-service agency

A full-service agency does it all. The upside is one point of contact and work that fits together. The risk is that “everything” means every part is a little shallow, or that you pay for departments you never use. Ask who does each piece of the work.

Digital marketing agency

A digital marketing agency runs the channels that bring in customers: Google Ads and Meta Ads, SEO, content, email and social, plus the reporting that ties them together. The work is ongoing, built on testing and adjusting. It also works with the foundation you already have. If your message is unclear or your website loses visitors, more traffic mostly makes that problem bigger.

Web design agency

A web design agency designs and builds websites. A good one starts with your audience and your story rather than a template. Ask what happens after launch, because hosting, updates and small changes are often a separate arrangement, and that is where gaps appear. SEO agency

An SEO agency makes you findable in Google and, increasingly, in AI answers such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. The work spans technical fixes, content and authority. It needs depth, yet it relies on your website and your positioning. Our piece on SEO vs GEO explains how classic search and AI search relate.

Strategic digital agency

A strategic digital agency looks at the business as a whole first. Who is the customer, what do you promise, what stands between you and growth, and in which order should you fix it? The difference from a consultancy is what happens next. A strong strategic agency also guides execution, so the strategy does not end up in a drawer. Our guide to digital strategy shows how that direction is set.

Brand strategy and digital execution in one place

If you want an agency that does strategic brand work and also executes digitally, look for one where the same people set the strategy and oversee delivery. The gap between strategy and execution is where most brands lose their message.

The pattern is familiar. A brand consultancy hands over a brand book. A web developer builds the site, a freelancer writes the copy, an ad agency launches campaigns. None of them has really read the brand book. The result is a website that promises one thing, ads that promise another and a brand that sounds slightly different on every channel.

It works better when one story underpins everything. For us that is often a BrandScript based on the StoryBrand framework: a clear account of your customer, their problem and your role in solving it. The website, the SEO and, later, the campaigns all build on it. For ATR Transmissies we ran a strategic customer analysis together with Shoop Shoop and wrote BrandScripts for garages and for private customers, and an SEO programme is running on transmissies.nl: “Organic traffic on transmissies.nl climbed to 1.2K visits a month with 115 keywords in the top 3.”

Ask one question in the first meeting: who writes the strategy, and is that person in the room when the website and campaigns are made?

How much does it cost to outsource marketing?

There is no standard price. The cost of outsourcing marketing depends on the type of agency, the scope of the work and the model: a fixed project, a monthly programme or hourly billing. Compare proposals on what they include and on who is accountable for results.

These factors move the price most:

  • How many channels and disciplines you hand over.
  • How much production is involved, such as content, photography and pages.
  • Who does the work: a senior strategist or a junior executor.
  • Project scope, for example whether only the homepage or every page is designed in detail.
  • Media spend, which always comes on top of the agency fee.

To give a sense of scale with our own rates: a focused SEO programme starts at a few hundred euros per month and grows with scope. Webdesign projects start around EUR 4,000, and larger CMS-driven platforms can reach EUR 20,000 or more.

For the marketing budget as a whole, one benchmark is Gartner’s 2026 CMO Spend Survey, which puts average marketing budgets at 7.8% of company revenue, up from 7.7% in 2025 (Gartner, 2026). Most respondents report revenue above 1 billion dollars, so treat the figure as a reference point rather than a target for a mid-sized company.

Ask for transparency on ad spend. Under Google’s policy, a partner that charges a management fee separate from your Google Ads costs must tell you in writing before your first purchase and show the fee on every invoice. It must also report your costs exactly as Google charged them, without its own fee mixed in (Google Ads, Transparency requirements).

How to choose a digital agency

Start with your problem, not with the agency. More enquiries, a new website, a brand that does not land, a digital direction for the next few years: the answer tells you which type of agency fits.

  1. Describe the problem in one sentence, with the result you want to see.
  2. Choose the agency type that matches that problem.
  3. Ask for comparable work and the results it produced.
  4. Ask who does the work day to day and who your fixed contact is.
  5. Ask how they measure success, and over what timeframe.
  6. Confirm that every account, all data and all content will be in your company’s name.

Pay attention to what the agency asks you. Google’s advice on hiring an SEO is a good test for any agency: a good partner wants to know what makes your business unique, who your competitors are and how your customers find you.

What a local Dutch agency adds

A local digital marketing agency in the Netherlands supports online growth in ways a remote one struggles to match. It knows how Dutch buyers search and compare, it understands the local market and its competitors, and it can sit at your table when a decision needs to be made. Locality matters less than fit, though. An agency around the corner that sells the wrong type of service will still get you the wrong result.

Red flags

  • A guaranteed first position in Google. Google is explicit that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking (Google Search Central).
  • Ad, analytics or domain accounts registered in the agency’s name.
  • A management fee hidden inside your media budget.
  • Reports full of reach and impressions with nothing about enquiries or revenue.
  • Changes to your site that nobody can explain.
  • A ready-made package proposed before anyone has learned how your business works.

How we help

Viralistic is a strategic digital partner in Amsterdam, founded and led by Marrallisa Kreijkes. We work with established businesses and premium brands that want one strategic lead instead of a stack of freelancers. The same partner keeps strategy, branding and design, webdesign with managed hosting, SEO and AI search, marketing and automation with n8n and Claude aligned.

We start with a foundation check. Can you explain the value you offer in a few minutes? Does your website work? Are you found in Google and in AI answers? Whatever is missing, we fill in the right order. If marketing is not the answer yet, we tell you honestly and point to the step that is. Once the foundation is healthy, we run Google Ads and Meta Ads built on your BrandScript. See all our services to find the right place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digital marketing firm?

A digital marketing firm is an agency that helps companies win customers through online channels, such as search advertising, paid social, SEO, content and email, and measures what each channel delivers. The term is used almost interchangeably with digital marketing agency. A broader digital agency may also handle brand strategy, website design and automation.

What does a digital agency do day to day?

It depends on the type. A typical week can include strategy sessions, designing or updating web pages, writing content, technical SEO fixes, managing ad campaigns and reporting on results. A good agency also asks a lot of questions, because the work only gets better with input about your customers, your offer and what has changed in your business.

How much does it cost to outsource marketing?

It depends on the number of channels, the amount of production and who does the work. At Viralistic a focused SEO programme starts at a few hundred euros per month and a webdesign project around EUR 4,000. Media spend always comes on top. Compare proposals on scope and accountability rather than on the monthly figure alone.

How can a local Dutch digital marketing agency support my company’s online growth?

A local agency knows how Dutch customers search, compare and decide, and can work with you in person. It can align your positioning, website, search visibility and campaigns so each channel supports the same message. The real value comes from accountability for the whole picture, not from the postcode, so judge it on fit and track record.

When should you choose a full-service agency?

Choose a full-service agency when several parts of your online presence need work at the same time and nobody in-house coordinates specialists. You get one contact and work that fits together. Ask who carries out each part and how deep that expertise goes, because breadth only helps when every part is done well.
