Digital agency in the Netherlands: services, costs and how to choose

Digital agency in the Netherlands: the short answer

A digital agency designs, builds and markets your complete online presence: website, brand, findability and automation. Dutch agencies typically charge €75 to €175 per hour; monthly budgets run from about €650 for a focused SEO programme to €25,000+ for large multichannel accounts. The real question when choosing: manage separate specialists yourself, or work with one partner under one strategic lead?

What does a digital agency do?

A digital agency bundles the disciplines that decide how your company performs online: strategy, design, technology and marketing. That is also what separates it from a classic digital marketing agency, which mainly runs campaigns. A digital agency also builds what sits underneath them. The website. The brand. The systems behind both.

In practice, that means four fields of work:

Web design and development

From custom websites to webshops and portals: design and engineering that loads fast, converts well and scales with your business.

Branding

Brand strategy, visual identity and tone of voice that make you recognisable and defend your price point. The foundation under everything else.

SEO and AI visibility

Findable in Google and in the AI answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Search engine optimisation plus GEO/AEO in one approach.

AI and workflow automation

Smart workflows, AI voice agents and integrations between your systems that take recurring work off your plate.

The four reinforce each other: branding and web design feed each other, and fast engineering gives SEO real leverage. Automation, meanwhile, makes sure the leads that come in actually get followed up. That is exactly why it pays to have them under one roof.

How the Dutch agency market is structured

Type digital agency netherlands into Google and you get a mix of directories, rankings and agency homepages. Behind that noise sits a market with roughly four flavours:

  • International network agencies. Part of holdings such as WPP, Omnicom, Publicis or Dentsu. Big, process-driven, built for corporate accounts.
  • Full-service boutiques. Independent firms that combine strategy, design, development and marketing, usually with five to fifty people. Viralistic sits in this group.
  • Specialists. A design agency, an SEO firm or a development studio that does one thing extremely well.
  • Freelancers. Individual specialists. Often excellent, but without a team, backup or the wider view.

Labels mean little here. One firm calls itself a digital branding agency, the next a digital design agency, a third a creative and digital agency, while their service lists largely overlap. Read past the label to the portfolio and to who will actually work on your project.

Quality signals that do carry weight: membership of the trade body Dutch Digital Agencies, independent reviews on Google and Clutch, and rankings such as the Emerce100 and FONK150. None of them are guarantees, but they make a decent first filter. If findability is your specific problem, read our guide to choosing an SEO agency in the Netherlands. Full-service or specialist: the real difference

The real difference is not the service list; it is who runs the show. Work with a separate web builder, an SEO consultant and a brand designer, and you are the project manager: three briefings, three timelines, three invoices, and nobody guarding the whole. Every handover costs time and loses information.

At a full-service digital agency, that direction sits with one strategic lead who treats website, brand, findability and automation as a single system. That is the core of how Viralistic works: no juggling between designers, developers and marketeers, but one person who owns the whole picture.

Full-service agencySeparate specialists
DirectionOne strategic leadYou coordinate everything
SpeedShort lines, no waiting between partiesDepends on several calendars
CoherenceBrand, site and marketing reinforce each otherRisk of disconnected islands
DepthSenior specialists per disciplineSometimes deeper on one niche
BudgetOne agreement, scalableStacked hourly rates and handovers

To be fair: a specialist wins when you have one sharply defined problem. If everything works except your ads, hire a paid-search specialist and be done with it. But the moment site, brand and marketing touch each other, and they almost always do, separate vendors mostly bill you for coordination.

What that looks like in practice

SilverDrive, a chauffeur service operating from Amsterdam across Europe, had its website and systems built by Viralistic and grew internationally on organic findability. Founder Joshua Faerber, in Dutch: “Viralistic begeleidde SilverDrive naar een internationaal gericht bedrijf dat volledig draait op organische vindbaarheid. De website en alle systemen besparen ons enorm veel tijd.” Translation: “Viralistic guided SilverDrive into an internationally oriented company that runs entirely on organic findability. The website and all the systems save us an enormous amount of time.”

What does a digital agency cost in the Netherlands?

Dutch agencies typically charge €75 to €175 per hour, with most rates between €80 and €150. Most engagements run on a monthly budget or project fee rather than by the hour. The ranges below are indicative market figures, not a quote; your scope sets the price.

Engagement typeIndicative priceBest for
Hourly rate€75 - €175 per hourOne-off jobs and advice
Small monthly programme (one channel)€500 - €1,000 per monthStarters and local businesses
SEO programme€650 - €5,000 per month (excl. VAT)SMBs up to competitive markets
Growth programme (multiple channels)€2,000 - €10,000 per monthScale-ups and established SMBs
Enterprise multichannel€10,000 - €25,000+ per monthCorporates and international brands

Project work sits outside these ranges. Website costs depend heavily on scope and custom work; our guide to custom website development covers current project pricing. For automation, an AI automation agency usually charges a project fee plus a modest monthly amount for maintenance.

Why is the range so wide? In the old model, serious SEO for a large company easily cost €20,000 per month: armies of copywriters and endless meetings. Fully automated SEO is the other extreme, and it simply never reaches page one. The workable middle is a senior specialist with an eagle-eye view, amplified by automation. That is how Viralistic keeps SEO programmes between €650 and around €5,000 per month, including 24/7 live reporting you can check yourself at any moment.

Compare outcomes, not hours

Ask every agency the same question: what result do you deliver by month six, and how do I verify it myself? A lower hourly rate with vague promises costs more than a higher rate with measurable commitments.

How to choose a digital agency in five steps

  1. Start with the goal, not the service. “More enquiries from Germany” is a better brief than “a new website”. The goal determines which disciplines you actually need.
  2. Check who does the work. Ask who will be on your account and how senior they are. An impressive pitch team means nothing if juniors handle delivery.
  3. Ask for proof that resembles your situation. Cases from your sector or with your type of goal, plus independent reviews on Google and Trustpilot. Call a reference; good agencies welcome it.
  4. Test the direction. Who guards the whole? How often do you speak to that person? And do you get live access to your data, or a monthly PDF?
  5. Mind the exit. Ownership of your site, content, data and ad accounts belongs with you. A monthly cancellation term is a sign of confidence.

Red flags: guaranteed rankings in Google, vagueness about ownership, reports without access to the underlying data, and prices far below the market. Someone always pays the bill; usually you, later.

When a big network agency beats a boutique (and when it does not)

A network agency is the better choice when your procurement department demands global framework contracts, 24/7 SLAs and heavy liability constructions, or when you need to buy media in ten countries at once. That scale is real, and a boutique should not bluff about it.

For nearly every Dutch SMB and most premium brands, the opposite holds. At a holding you co-fund the overhead and rarely get the A-team; at a senior boutique, the person from the first conversation actually works on your project. International ambition is no counterargument either: Viralistic serves clients in the Netherlands, the UAE and the DACH region from its office on the Herengracht in Amsterdam.

AI visibility: the discipline your agency needs an opinion on

Search behaviour is shifting. Alongside Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews now answer a growing share of questions, including commercial comparison queries about which agency or product to choose. If you are absent from those answers, you simply do not exist for a growing group of buyers.

This field is called GEO or AEO, and it is not a trick. You earn a mention in AI answers with authority, structure and verifiable proof: by being the best answer, not the loudest voice. Our explainer on AI SEO covers how that works. So put one test question to every agency on your shortlist: how do you get my brand into AI answers, and how do you measure it? Anyone who responds with gimmicks instead of substance is off the list.

Frequently asked questions

What does a digital agency do?

A digital agency designs, builds and markets a company’s online presence. That covers websites and webshops, branding, SEO and AI visibility, content, advertising and automation. Full-service agencies combine those disciplines under one strategic direction; specialist agencies focus on a single one. The right type depends on your goal and how much coordination you want to do yourself.

What is the best digital agency?

There is no single best digital agency; there is only the best agency for your goal, market and budget. Rankings and directories mostly measure size and reputation. Look instead at cases that resemble your situation, independent reviews on Google, Clutch and Trustpilot, and the seniority of the team that will actually do your work.

Who are the big 6 digital marketing agencies?

The “big six” usually refers to the global holding companies: WPP, Omnicom, Publicis Groupe, Interpublic (IPG), Dentsu and Havas. The map keeps being redrawn by consolidation, as Omnicom’s takeover of IPG shows. For most businesses in the Netherlands, these names are trivia; they matter at corporate budget levels.

Which agency is best for digital marketing?

The best fit follows from your goal. For one clear channel problem, pick a specialist. For growth where website, brand and marketing interact, pick a full-service partner with senior people on delivery. Judge candidates on relevant cases, verifiable reviews and whether they commit to measurable results within a defined period.

What are 7 types of digital marketing?

The seven types most commonly listed are SEO, search advertising (SEA/PPC), content marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, affiliate marketing and influencer marketing. AI visibility (GEO/AEO) is the newest addition to that list. Our guide on what a digital marketing agency does covers each type in detail.

How much does a digital agency cost in the Netherlands?

Indicative Dutch market rates: €75 to €175 per hour, small single-channel programmes from €500 to €1,000 per month, SEO from €650 to €5,000 per month, multichannel growth programmes from €2,000 to €10,000, and enterprise accounts from €10,000 to €25,000+ per month. Scope, competition and seniority drive the differences.
